Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
